Bagóvit Hair Care Bottle Design

Case study

Bagóvit entered the personal care market with its Hair Care Line, offering five specialized collections that provide solutions for all hair types using superior quality formulas based on exclusive natural ingredients and pure vitamin A. Each collection—“Deep Nutrition,” “Intensive Repair,” “Long Hair & Frizz-Free,” “Radiant Color,” and “Sublime Shine”—is formulated to deliver visible, targeted results: from deep nourishment and hydration, to repairing in minutes, controlling frizz, maintaining vibrant color longer, and providing sublime shine.

Designing a plastic bottle for this shampoo and conditioner products, that use the same bottle for both products—one of which is used upside down—requires creative problem-solving to ensure functionality, ergonomics, and aesthetics.

The bottle features a symmetrical design with a white matte texture and is topped with an elegant golden cap. A key design element is a drop-shaped area that connects with Bagovit’s brand identity, symbolizing care and protection for the hair. This unique shape is complemented by rounded edges, making the bottle easy to handle and enhancing its visual appeal. The design is both functional and aesthetically pleasing, perfectly suited for the cosmetic category, offering a balance of practicality and elegance. Here’s a detailed overview of the design process:

Market Research & Concept Development

  • Market Analysis: Start by researching similar dual-function bottles, focusing on personal care products. Evaluate competitor designs, market trends, and user preferences, including ergonomic considerations and sustainability features.
  • User Needs & Brand Alignment: Identify user needs specific to shampoo and conditioner bottles, such as ease of use with wet hands, squeezability, and clear distinction between products. The design should align with the brand’s aesthetics and values, especially if it aims for sustainability or minimalism.

Initial Sketching & Ideation

  • Sketches and Conceptualization: Begin sketching ideas for a symmetrical or modular bottle shape that can function equally well whether right side up or upside down. Experiment with shapes that support stability, as the conditioner will be used upside down.
  • Design for Differentiation: Conceptualize ways to differentiate shampoo and conditioner visually and tactically, such as color-coded caps, textured grips, or embossed icons. This helps users identify the products even when they are placed inversely.

2D Modeling & Preliminary Sizing

  • Proportional Balance and Ergonomics: During the initial 2D modeling phase, we meticulously balanced aesthetic appeal with ergonomic needs to create a bottle that offers a comfortable grip, stable weight distribution, and easy handling. Every curve and line was crafted to optimize both visual and functional balance, enhancing user experience.
  • Technical Constraints: We considered important technical requirements, such as transport on the filling line and specific limitations on bottle shape. These structural guidelines ensured compatibility with manufacturing processes, supporting a smooth production flow.
  • Cap and Closure Compatibility: Based on the client’s brief, we selected from a predefined set of existing caps. This approach minimized costs by avoiding new cap development and ensured a seamless fit with existing filling line equipment, providing a tested and reliable closure solution.
  • Blueprint Creation: From the 2D design, we developed detailed preliminary blueprints, defining dimensions and estimated volume capacity. These initial blueprints formed the foundation for the next stages, offering a comprehensive visual and technical guide for 3D modeling and prototyping.

3D Modeling & Rendering

  • Detailed CAD Modeling: The design was translated into precise 3D CAD models, focusing on accurate volume specifications for the intended bottle capacity and technical details to minimize production problems.
  • Rendering for Visualization: High-quality renderings provided photorealistic previews, allowing stakeholders to visualize the final look and make informed Rapid Prototyping & Refinement: Initial 3D-printed prototypes allowed us to evaluate physical interaction, focusing on “prehensile” aspects—how users hold, pour, and handle the bottle. This hands-on testing guided refinements to improve functionality and user experience.

  • Interaction with bottle manufacturer and technical team from the company to confirm lack of conflicts in the bottle design vis-a-vis bottle production restrictions and any filling restrictions".

Design Finalization

  • Final modeling: To ensure durability, we calculated final volume specifications, and other requirements set forth in the interaction with the glass manufacturer and brewery team.
  • Production Optimization: We collaborated closely with the glass manufacturer to finalize the mold design and prepare for efficient production while adhering to technical restrictions.
  • Mold Development: Once the design is finalized, molds are created for HDPE blow molding. Molds are engineered to produce consistent wall thickness, seamless closures, and a smooth finish.
  • Approval of Trial Molds and Production Mold Finalization With the trial molds approved—having met all design and functional specifications without the need for adjustments—the molds were replicated to create the full set of cavities required for production.
